January Newsletter

Who can believe December has flown by and it is already time for Winter Break? Due to the excitement of Winter Fest and practice we will be continuing some of December's curriculum into January. The Kindergarteners will still be reading books about the weather.  We will be focusing on the letters  K and Q. All students will going home with a new book and extra word cards. Please read these with your child; it makes such a difference. Many of the children are beginning to really read; it is such a joy to watch!
In Math we are still working on addition and  simple subtraction. We will continue to work on subtraction for most of January. We put our planned Social Studies on hold to learn about holiday traditions and were lucky enough to have several parents come in and teach us about their cultures. All of the presentations were excellent and the children really enjoyed them.  In January for Social Studies, students  will learn about Benjamin Franklin and study patriotism and freedom.  In Science, we move on to Earth Science and begin studying the weather.  For Writer’s Workshop we will be focusing on word choice, trying to avoid overused words and getting students to be adventurous with the words they use in their writing. We are really pleased with the students' development in writing.
In January we will begin Student-of-the-Week. We wanted each child to have a full week so the program will continue until June. On the Monday that your child is the chosen student, we ask that you send in a poster that you and your child have made at home with pictures of your child and things that they like.  Each day after that the Student-of-the-Week may bring one item from home to share for show and tell. One day of the week, a parent may come in and read to the class. You may bring a book from home or we can provide one. This can be done first thing in the morning or right before dismissal, so you don't have to make an extra trip to school.  Then on another day, preferably Friday afternoon, a parent can come in and share something special about their child. You might want to bring your child's favorite snack (remember no nuts), a photo album from home or come and do a craft with the class.  It can be any day, but we ask that you let us know in advance. The schedule of children and dates follows. If you have a scheduling conflict, please let us know or swap with another parent and let us know of any changes. We will send reminder emails two weeks before your child's turn.
